Do you ever have an urge to shake up your home once in a while and try a totally new look? Are you moving into a new place soon and already thinking of how you want it to look? If yes, you're probably scouring the net looking for different ideas. In this post, I'm going to write about a few design styles that caught my eye. Who knows, maybe you're already considering some of these!

1. Hygge style

Hygge (pronounced "hue-gah" or "hoo-guh") is a word in Danish or Norwegian that as a noun, includes something nice, cozy, and safe, with feelings of wellness and contentment. Hmm, seems like the ideal description of a home! As expected, hygge is characterized by rooms that are comfortable and cozy. Think lots of fluffy pillows and soft warm throws. A neutral color scheme, such as varying tones of greige and warm whites, and soft lighting are also some of its attributes. But remember that simple doesn't have to mean boring. Don't hesitate to add in subtle textures and subdued patterns!

2. Biophilic style

This is probably my favorite style, but I have to admit, I'm not sure if I have the green thumb to stick to it for the long term. Biophilic style is characterized by a connection to nature, which is best exemplified by an abundance of green plants. If you want to keep maintenance at a minimum, you can consider sticking to plants that require minimal watering and attention, such as snake plants and spider plants. But please be careful if you have curious pets or small children as some plants can be toxic to them. Another easy way to add to the biophilic style is the addition of wood and stone elements. Wooden furniture and stone pots would be excellent choices.

3. Japandi

Japandi grew in popularity during COVID-19 and it doesn't seem to be slowing down any time soon. So what is it exactly? As the name implies, it's a combination of minimalist traditional Japanese décor and cozy Scandinavian design style. Kinda like hygge, but with a Japanese twist. The key to Japandi is declutter, declutter, and more declutter (Marie Kondo anyone?). Japandi strives to create an atmosphere of tranquillity by mimicking nature through the use of light browns and warm whites, organic fabrics like cotton and linen, and natural wood in light soothing tones.

4. Hollywood Regency

At the other end of hygge and Japandi is the "more is more" design style of Hollywood Regency. Also known as Hollywood Glam or Regency Moderne, it's all about glitz and glamor reminiscent of the golden age of cinema. It's intended to be over the top and extravagant. Definitely not for the weak at heart, but perfect if you love drama and making a statement! This design style makes use of bold colors and prints, often contrasted with metallics and mirrors. Animal prints, especially zebra prints, are common. Because Hollywood Regency is reflective of a bygone era, it's also a fun way to incorporate retro elements like velvet furniture and checkerboard flooring.

5. Industrial chic style

Industrial chic design style has been around for a long time now, but it's still well-loved and it's easy to see why. Originally, this design style arose out of converting abandoned factories and warehouses into liveable lofts, with exposed brick, beams, ducts, and pipes adding to their allure. But just because you don't live in a converted loft doesn't mean you can't try out this design style. Industrial chic favors raw materials like metal, wood, and concrete. Black wrought-iron light fixtures and natural wood furniture are both easy ways to incorporate this style. Don't forget, imperfection is an element of industrial chic!

There's too many design styles to write about in one post (which is a good thing!). Stay tuned for Part 2!
