Who doesn't love the 70s? Bell-bottoms, platform shoes, the very first Star Wars movie, and of course, "Rocket Man" (aka Sir Elton John)! There's a photo of my mom holding me as a baby while she wore bell-bottoms AND sky-hi platform wedge sandals. I told her I was lucky she didn't trip and I didn't go flying!

We all know that fashion trends cycle back over and over, but home décor does too. Of course, it doesn't come back exactly the same way, but there are definitely fun ideas that we can try out in 2022.

1. 70s velvet sofas and couches

The 70s were about velvet sofas and couches. I'm not sure how clean I can keep them with a cat running around. That's a lot of lint remover I'm going to have to invest in! But a couple of velvet cushions will be totally doable. I think dark purple or violet velvet cushions will look amazing on a gray sofa. And I think mixing up textures, like a velvet cushion with a knitted one in a complementary color, would really make them stand out.

If you love bright colors and aren't afraid of being a bit kitschy, a fuschia velvet one would be really fun too!

2. 70s wall-to-wall shag carpeting

Ok, I have to admit, wall-to-wall shag carpeting was a bit much. But I do love its fluffiness and how soft they feel under my bare feet. And they do add a lot of texture to the room. A very good compromise is a shag rug! To keep it more modern, you can choose one in a white or neutral tone color so that it doesn't stand out quite as much (or choose a brightly colored one if that's what you're into!).

I love having mine in the bedroom next to my bed, where it's the first thing I step on in the morning. I think my cat loves it too, judging by how often she lies on it to groom herself!

3. 70s rattan furniture

I love the natural look of rattan. Luckily, there's so many options for adding bits of rattan here and there to your home décor. The easiest are pots. They come in so many sizes, so you can decide how much or how little rattan you want to add to your room. And there's different shades too, so you can choose ones that you think fit best with the rest of the room. For instance, a lightly colored one would look best if your room is generally lighter in color overall and vice versa.

Another option that's often overlooked is rattan trash cans! I have one and love it because it looks much less utilitarian than most trash cans.

4. 70s terrazzo flooring

Ahh, the ubiquitous terrazzo flooring! I still see it everywhere. I do like speckled things, maybe it's because they remind me of Easter and robin eggs! A really easy way to incorporate this trend is with your bathroom accessories. Matching soap dishes and lotion pumps with a terrazzo print would instantly add some flair to your bathroom.

Because your bathroom is a smaller enclosed space, don't be afraid to try something more fun and daring with it! Use it as an opportunity to try out home décor trends that you may not otherwise try out in other parts of your home.

5. 70s orange and brown homes

There are photos of my parents decked out in head to toe orange and brown corduroy! Not sure about that anymore, but I do think orange and brown home décor accents still look great in 2022. I just wouldn't go overboard with it. Imagine if you have a dark brown couch. Wouldn't it look great if you added a few darker brown and orange cushions to it? Maybe a yellow mustard one too. I personally think that'll be a great look for autumn.

I actually have a macrame plant hanger from my childhood home that I still use today! Does anyone else have something they've kept from the 70s that you can now reuse in 2022?

Let me know what it is!
