The Vancouver Interior Design Show 2024: A Recap of Innovation and Inspiration
A crisp late summer day with absolutely beautiful weather . . . ah, what better than to spend it at the Vancouver Interior Design Show!
The Vancouver Interior Design Show (IDS) has once again left its mark as the West Coast's premier design fair, bringing together a diverse array of design-centric brands, independent makers, and visionary designers. This year's event, held from September 26 to 29, 2024 at the Vancouver Convention Center, was a vibrant showcase of creativity and forward-thinking in the world of interior design for design enthusiasts and professionals alike.

As attendees wandered through the expansive show floor, they were greeted by an array of innovative exhibits, and would be forgiven if they mistook many of the exhibits for art pieces. This is a testament to the creativity and innovation that thrives on the West Coast.

The show also placed a strong emphasis on sustainability and the future of design, with many exhibitors showcasing products that blend aesthetic appeal with environmental consciousness. This approach aligns with the broader movement within the design community to create products that are not only beautiful but also contribute positively to our world, making it a better place. Some of the more creative ones included vases made from discarded dress shirts to lamps made from treated fish skin!

I can confirm, there was absolutely zero fishy smell!
Following on this concept of environmental awareness was an emphasis on making our homes at one with nature, including the use of natural wood furniture, and challenging us to make the most use of our outdoor living space.

This theme of sustainability also extended to guest speakers Clinton Cuddington of Measured Architecture, Shirley Shen of Haeccity Studio Architecture, and Marianne Amodio of MA+HG Architects, with moderator Stacey McLachlan, Senior Editor of Western Living Magazine. Their discussion "The Evolution of West Coast Modern" mused with the idea that stylistic evolutions and adaptations may be resulting in the emergence of a new regional style in British Columbia.

Technology also made a strong showing at this year's event, with an abundance of energy-saving lights, 3D printing and digital art displays.

The whole display, both backdrop and table, was made using 3D printing!

The District marketplace was a treasure trove of innovation, featuring over 25 small studios and makers presenting their unique products and designs. It was an opportunity for design enthusiasts to take home a piece of the creativity that filled the air at IDS Vancouver.

For those who missed the event or wish to relive the experience, the IDS Vancouver continues to grow each year, solidifying its place as a key event in North America's design landscape and a beacon of inspiration for design lovers and professionals. Whether you're looking to remodel your home, seeking design inspiration, or simply have a passion for creativity, it's an event that promises to ignite the imagination and offer new perspectives on the art of design.
